Your Marketing Start-up

Some small business owners were asking me how to find more clients to increase sales and what marketing techniques to use.

The truth is that there is no one technique or method that would work for everyone, every product or service. You need to try out many things until you find what works in your market. But remember, even if you find what works, sometimes you do need to change or adjust things over time and keep marketing. You can have the best service or product, but what happens if no one know about it? – Exactly, NOTHING.

I’ll share some marketing strategies, so everyone could make use of them. Keep in mind that these techniques will only work if you have done your homework before starting up a business and that you are in the business for the right reasons. In addition, they are just the tip of the iceberg and you will need to analyze each and every one of them to make a decision which way to go.

So here are some ideas and verified over time marketing tips to increase your clientele:

1. Start out with analyzing the market:

Who your target audience is; who use of your services or products (gender, age, geographical area, etc)

What/ who is your competition. Check whether the market saturated or you are offering some unique services/products

What you competitors do, how they market products/ services

2. Determine the budget; how much you have available considering earnings and expenses, how much you want/can to spend

3. Determine what you need; how many clients you need to attract or how many products you need to sell, and how much would this cost.

4. Choose the marketing approach:

Hiring a marketing company/consultant to do the marketing

Personal touch approach; when you start out by contacting your closest people, friends and expand further

Direct mail; letters, flyers, post cards, unusual mailers, etc.

Cold calls

Signs, posters, billboard ads

Radio, TV ads

Newspaper, magazine, yellow pages ads

Internet marketing; websites, Pay per Click (PPC), Pay per Impression (CPM), Search Engine Optimization (SEO), online social networks, publish articles, email marketing (not spamming), blogging

5. Implement your marketing strategies

6. Evaluate your marketing strategies. Track the leads coming from each marketing piece, reevaluate which techniques work best and which bring most return on investment. Note, not every marketing technique has the same timeframe and will not show results in the same period of time.

All this is just a very rough idea on where to start in marketing your business, services, or products. I’ll provide you with some more detailed information or will direct you towards where to find it.
So if you need any help with marketing now, just email me coachrm@gmail.com and I’ll be happy to give you a hand.

Take care,

Start out with analyzing the market:

Who your target audience is; who use of your services or products (gender, age, geographical area, etc)

What/ who is your competition. Check whether the market saturated or you are offering some unique services/products

What you competitors do, how they market products/ services

Determine the budget; how much you have available considering earnings and expenses, how much you want/can to spend

Determine what you need; how many clients you need to attract or how many products you need to sell, and how much would this cost.

Choose the marketing approach:

Hiring a marketing company/consultant to do the marketing

Personal touch approach; when you start out by contacting your closest people, friends and expand further

Direct mail; letters, flyers, post cards, unusual mailers, etc.

Cold calls

Signs, posters, billboard ads

Radio, TV ads

Newspaper, magazine, yellow pages ads

Internet marketing; websites, Pay per Click (PPC), Pay per Impression (CPM), Search Engine Optimization (SEO), online social networks, publish articles, email marketing (not spamming), blogging

Implement your marketing strategies

Evaluate your marketing strategies. Track the leads coming from each marketing piece, reevaluate which techniques work best and which bring most return on investment. Note, not every marketing technique has the same timeframe and will not show results in the same period of time.

All this is just a very rough idea on where to start in marketing your business, services, or products. I’ll provide you with some more detailed information or will direct you towards where to find it.

So if you need any help with marketing now, just email me coachrm@gmail.com and I’ll be happy to give you a hand.

Take care,

What is next in your life? How to choose the right career.

Some of us are very happy with the current situation, job, or just life in general, or at least we do not question those things. Others, on the other hand, constantly seek for ways to achieve more, improve the life, change things, or figure out what they really want to do in life.
The issue is that sometimes we do not know which way to go or what career to choose, or we’re not sure what we want. This happened to me and, I’m sure, to most of us.

2 Step plan to figure out what you want

Ask yourself these questions, don’t think much, just jot down several ideas that come to your mind

First of all, figure out if you want to have a job or a business. You need to figure out whether you want to find a job or work for yourself and own a business. People are different and everyone has different capabilities and wants. It may seem that owning a business should be the right way to go, but not everyone is capable of doing this, and not everyone wants such route.

Now answer this: If you had all the money in the world, what would you like to do, what career or business would you choose? Brainstorm and write down things you enjoy doing, work you like to do, career you’ve been dreaming about, etc. Take a look at your list and pick your top 3. Does any one of your top three choices reflect what you do now? If yes, GREAT! You are moving the right direction. However, don’t forget to assess your progress and reevaluate your goals from time to time (whether they still relevant or need to be tweaked).

If your current job or business is not even close to what you want to do, start taking action to move towards your dream job, business or whatever else you want to do.

I know that sometimes it seems impossible to achieve the dreams, but the reality is – all is possible.

The only person that is stopping you from achieving what you want is YOU.

Just start thinking and working towards what you really love and want to do. The best deal is to do what you love and make some money out of it. However, not everyone can do this. So try finding a job or a career as close to what you like doing as possible.

How to choose the right Career?

• Assess your interests, passion, skills, abilities, and personality. Since you already identified your interests and passion in the previous section, now you need to figure out what you know and what you can do. Based on what you know and can do, think about what kind of work could you do. If you’re not sure, don’t worry, there are lots of career assessment tools that can help. I would suggest reading “What Color Is Your Parachute” by Richard N. Bolles. This will give you a better idea of yourself, possible careers, and career assessments.

• Research your career choices. Since you know your likes and dislikes, now it is time to see what is out there. If you know what job or career you want, all you need to do now is start working towards that. If you’re not sure, what you could possibly do for a living or what job or career is right for you, don’t get stuck, there are many books and online resources to match your skills with possible careers.

Here are a few career choice resources:

Books on Career Change
Books on How to Find a Perfect Career

Online resources:
O*Net Online
Occupational Outlook Handbook from the Department of Labor
Career Research Center
O*Net Skills Research
Career Interests Game

Here are some questions and the answer to these should give you a pretty good idea of what career or job might suit you best. Write down answers to these questions and look for a pattern and common things. You will be able to narrow down to several choices.

What area/field would interest you? E.g. IT, travel industry, history, beauty, politics, communications, agriculture, etc.

Are you people’s person or you’d rather stay away from interactions with people?

Are you a team member or an independent worker?

Do you like managing or supervising others?

Do people come to you for an advice?

Are you a quick learner?

Do you like children (so you could work with them on daily basis)?

Do you like teaching?

Do you want to work for yourself or you don’t mind having a job?

Do you usually need a support group or are you an independent person?

Are you a business person or can you/do you want to run a business? Be realistic. It is not what you think you want, but what you can really do.

Is a flexible work schedule a must?

Do you like structure?

Do you like numbers? Could you work with numbers every day?

Would you prefer day or night shift?

Could and Would you travel for work?

After you narrow down your choices, do research on your possible job or career options. This may achieved by talking to your family, friends, coworkers, etc., doing research online, interviewing people who have careers that you’re seeking, or simply hiring a career adviser.

Now that you have an idea of what you want to do, you need to figure out how you can get from where you are now to where you want to be.

A fast track to your goal. 7 steps will get you what you want.

What is your goal? Write down (yes, you need to do this) what exactly you want to achieve (your goals) or what you want to change and describe everything as best as you can. Check “SMART” goals in “Your New Year’s Resolution Tips” for more information on how to set goals or write what you want.

Start with the end result in mind – Describe how your life would look like if you achieved what you wanted. As much as it may sound strange, act and think as if you have already achieved your goal; moving forward in your mind will take you much closer to your “wants.”

Now think of the steps that would take you “there.” Whether it is going back to school to gain some knowledge, volunteering, hiring a career coach, or something else, think it over and write down every step you need to go through in order to achieve your goal.

Develop an action plan. Take each step and develop an action plan on what exactly you need to do to get to your milestone (a step in your plan). Think of what it would take to get you from one step to another and what actions you need to take.

Commit to your goal. If you’re not committed to achieve what you want and change things, you will go nowhere. If you do not want to hire a life or business coach, work with your friends or family. Tell 5 of your closest friends what you want to achieve and what you’re doing ask them to hold you accountable. Then tell 5 strangers each week about what you’re trying to accomplish. Only spreading a word out will make you feel differently about the road to success.

Evaluate your progress. From time to time you need to evaluate what you achieve, to stay on track, and recommit to your goals. Timing really depends on what you want to achieve and how fast you can move forward. There is no rule how often you need to check your, but make sure you track the progress often enough and modify things as you, if needed.

Celebrate your achievements. This will keep you motivated and eager to move forward and act faster.

Good Luck!

Good Luck!

Take care,

Take care,

Learn to Relax. You don’t need much to feel happy.

I was browsing the TV guide to see what’s on and just randomly clicked on some game show. It appeared that a lady has won a Jacuzzi and some tennis sport set. She was so happy as if she won free groceries for a lifetime or 10 million dollars. Was this because she was so happy that she won something (maybe she never won anything in her life) or was it because she appreciated everything that was coming to her? Well, I guess, we’ll never know…

Again and again it occurs to me that we do not value what we have or who is with us now. Why are we not happy with what we have every day? Why we do not appreciate small things we have? Why are we after the big ones all the time and forget what’s really under our noses?

Sometimes I catch myself thinking how I can improve my life, do more, earn more, find more clients, etc. But only seldom I really look and appreciate what I have now and take some things for granted.

What about you? I’m sure most of us do this. We need to be reminded to ‘stop and smell the roses,’ to enjoy life now, and to live now. This does not mean that we do not need to plan the future, figure out what we want, or to set the goals and work towards then. We do. But be reasonable.

If you:
• Have not had a vacation in past several years or at least several days off for yourself
• Work every day with no days off
• Saw or spoke to your family over a year ago
• Catch yourself thinking about work even when you’re spending time with the family
• Always need to do something and cannot relax

Then STOP. You need to change things in your life.
At the beginning, learn to RELAX.

First of all, you need to figure if you want for yourself more than just a job, business or money. If you do, take care of yourself first, then take care of others. If you’re not well, you will not be able to help others.

Secondly, look at your schedule and start taking 10 minutes off every day just to relax. Just sit down or lie down, and do nothing. If you have a nice view, enjoy it. Do not allow your thoughts to overwhelm you, and do not let yourself think about anything, except maybe ‘how wonderful this view is’… I have to warn you, this will seem VERY weird, just to sit and do nothing and think of nothing. You will struggle for the first couple days. However, more and more you do this, you will learn to relax and gain more from spending couple minutes to yourself that trying to earn all the money in the world or work 24/7. You cannot have it all, unfortunately.

If you still cannot make yourself relax, try aroma therapy, massage, some music.. Here are some suggestions:

The Very Best Of Enya

The New Year is coming and you, like most of us probably started thinking about the upcoming year, new goals, ideas, and new beginnings. I’m sure, you also reflect on what was accomplished this past year or whether it was a good year. Some of us would compare the notes to see if the goals set last year were accomplished, while others would not even remember the goals they set.

The fact is that the same pattern occurs every year. When the New Year is approaching, we all want to start some things over, be nicer and kinder, accomplish more, start something new, find someone new, or simply be better off. However, many of us realize that we did not accomplish everything we wanted during the year. Then we set some new goals or reframe the old ones, and promise ourselves that the upcoming year will be different and that we will achieve better results.

Why does the goal setting cycle repeat around the same time every year?

Research shows that the end of November and beginning of December of each year is the time when people start thinking about the upcoming year – about the future. For some strange reason many of us would not set any big goals in the middle of the year or some other time of the year. Our human nature tells us that the New Year is the best time for new beginnings. This is the time when we can start over, improve on things, set new goals, accomplish new things, etc. The New Year is like a new blank page – when we close an old book and start a new story – new life.

Do you usually accomplish all the goals you set?
If not, do you know why you do not achieve some of the goals?

Let’s look at the other side of the coin, i.e. why you do not always achieve the results you want. Whether it is to lose 20 pounds, learn Spanish, better manage time, get married, or earn more money, find love, buy a new car, change jobs, find a job… you name it, you set the goals and sometimes forget about them.

Do you know why? This may happen because you:

are no longer interested in pursuing certain goal;

simply forget about what you wanted to achieve if you never wrote it down;

do not evaluate your progress and reassess “where” you are from time to time;

do not know how to set good realistic goals

do not do this for yourself, but maybe because you feel obligated to achieve what people around you want, etc.

Can you think of anything else? If so, please share, make a comment below or email me.

Now, ask yourself this…

How often do I accomplish goals that I set?

How many years in the last 10 have I accomplished at least 50% of the goals I set?

What were the reasons that some of the goals were not reached?

If you ever thought of any of this before, this means that you care about yourself and your promises, and you get upset when at the end of the year you do not see the results of your last year’s New Year resolution. But don’t be disappointed with yourself as this happens to everyone and I mean – everyone- not some, not most of us, but everyone. At some point of our lives we do not achieve what we want. This is called LIFE.

Therefore, here are some tips for you to make sure that this New Year’s resolution is meaningful to you and not going down the drain.

Goal Setting Tips

Have SMART Goals

1. Set Specific Goals

Be specific about want you achieve. Do not set generic goals like “I want to be rich”. Correct me if I’m wrong, but we all want to be rich. However, everyone’s interpretation of what “being rich” means can be different. To some of us this might mean monetary wealth while to others “being rich” may not be even associated with material things. Specify what you want to achieve; break your goal down into several sentences, if needed.

Keep it simple and clear. Pretend that you write a goal, and the next time you read it is in a year. Would you understand now what you meant a year ago? When writing a goal, make sure you’re clear about what you want. Even if another person reads your goal, he/she needs to understand your goal and what exactly you want to accomplish. Phrase it in such a way that when at any point of time you look at it, you know exactly where you’re “going” – what you want to accomplish.

2. Set Measurable Goals

Set the goals that you can actually measure and evaluate. The purpose of the goal setting process is to make sure that at the end you achieve it. How will you know if you achieved a goal if you never do not measure your success = goal accomplishment?

So make sure you state specifically what and when you want to accomplish and how you are going to measure your progress. If you cannot measure your goal, i.e. see the measurable result at the end, you will not be able to manage the execution.

Set the criteria to measure your progress. If you want to stay on track and see your progress, you need to know how you will evaluate the advancement towards the goal. Set the milestones by breaking down the goal into smaller steps with a built in timeline (i.e. date to accomplish the milestone). Once you get through the milestones, you will be able to see if and how you are moving forward. This will help you to clearly see the progress and results, stay on track, and motivate yourself to move forward.

3. Set Achievable/ Attainable Goals

Did you know that you can achieve almost any goal you set? It is all about developing yourself towards the goals you want to attain; gaining knowledge, developing skills, abilities, finances, etc. It is like going to school for your Master’s degree. First, you need to get your Bachelor’s degree, i.e., decide on your major, take classes, pay for classes, graduate, and only then take an exam, pass it and move towards the next Master’s degree.

You will identify goals and prioritize them based on how important they are to you and your situation, current skills, abilities, finances, etc. You need to determine what you can and cannot achieve at the given time or for the determined time frame and be realistic about it. You know you cannot fly a Boeing without a pilot license and experience. So first, you’d need to set more attainable goals like getting finances, going to school and getting a license.

4. Set Realistic Goals

Of course, you may set any goals you want, but do not expect to accomplish things like… losing 30 pounds in 2 weeks, flying to the moon, or earning 5 million dollars in a month. For some this may be achievable, but for the rest of us – common people – it is fairly unlikely to accomplish such goals right now and without proper planning. Do not set yourself for failure, set goals that you think you can accomplish.

If you want to challenge yourself, my suggestion is to give yourself less time to reach the goal or to set a slightly higher standard. For example, you want to start a new business. Your original plan was to get it off the ground in one year and have 10 clients by the end of year one. If you want challenge yourself, you may want to give yourself less than 1 year to achieve this and set a goal not for 10, but maybe 15 clients. Don’t forget, however, that with this “challenge” you’ll need to invest more time in developing business and/or more money to progress faster.

Be realistic about your capabilities and abilities. Weigh all the options and possibilities of what you can and cannot do, what you can or cannot control (most of us tend to think that we can control things when, in reality, we cannot), and how much time something can really take.

5. Set Timely / Time based Goals

Time frame is necessary when setting goals. This gives you a deadline and idea of when you need to see the results and finish a project = achieve your goal. If a goal has no date or time frame, you do not know when it needs to be accomplished. Therefore, there is no commitment, you will not hold yourself accountable nor you can develop a plan on how you are going to get where you want to be.

If you say “I want to go Paris.” This is just some idea that you might like to visit Paris someday, but it is not a goal that you set for yourself and work towards achieving it. A goal would sound like “I will visit Paris in August of 2010.” A goal with a time frame will enable you to set your mind into motion and give you an urgency to start working on achieving a goal.

Time is also very important when you prioritize your goals. When you write all your goals, prioritize them and separate them into short term (what you want to accomplish next week, next month or next 90 days) and long term goals (what you want to accomplish next year, next 5 years). This will give you an idea of which goals are more important or urgent, which ones need more time to work on, etc.

Note, when setting time, make sure it is reasonable and realistic. A target date should help you accomplish what you want, not to overstretch or bring unnecessary stress into your life.

How do you keep motivating yourself and moving forward during difficult times?

If I ask “How are you doing these days”, how would you respond?

I hear some people discussing about how bad the economic situation is, that gas prices are going up or that there is no gas, houses do not sell, banks do not give out loans anymore, etc. Others, however, are trying to look for good things and take advantage of the opportunities even during these turbulent times.

Where are you now? Do you see a glass half empty or half full?

Everything depends on how you choose to view things. Yes, you may not believe what I just said, but this is true. It is all about what you say to yourself, what’s in your head, whether you choose to react or respond to the situation, whether you prefer to complain and see only bad things coming to you or you are able to stop for a minute and “smell the roses”, see a thread o of sunshine through the clouds and enjoy the view it as much as you can.

It is all about the CHOICES. It is all about your perception and how you view the world around you.

Have you ever heard about Positive Reframing?

Reframing is about SHIFTing your perception so you could see things in a different light.

I often wonder… why we so seldom take advantage of positive reframing. This can be a tremendous step towards the positive thinking, improvement, effectiveness, better results, even happiness. Of course, depending how we reframe situations, we may become empowered or restricted.

Let’s say you lose a job. You may view this situation in a negative light – as a loss and a negative impact on your life. Yes, you might have lost income, lost great workplace, a wonderful manager and coworkers, opportunities to work on interesting projects, etc. You name it… you can find lots of negative points about the situation.

However, where would you end up with this kind of thinking?

What if you tried to look for positive things in the same situation? I already hear you saying… ‘You must be crazy trying to find positive things in a job situation.’

Trust me, things are often not as bad as you first think. The way you perceive things will most likely determine the end result and where you will end up. If you, just for a brief period of time, think what other opportunities this job loss has opened for you, I’m sure you’ll find a lot of positive about the situation.

Always ask yourself… was I really happy with this job? Maybe it was time for a change? What experience and knowledge did I gain there? You can always apply your skills and knowledge in different environments. What do I love doing? What are my dreams? Could I pursue my hobby as a new career opportunity? Was I putting off certain things I loved doing?

If you could just give yourself permission to dig deeper and see what good things you can take from the situation, your life would be much brighter. We often cannot change the situation, but we can change our thinking which in turn will change how we view the situation.

Why does Coaching work?

We know coaching works because we tested it ourselves. Most of us, coaches, either had a coach in the past or still work with a coach to keep us focused and on track, so we know exactly what you will go through and what you need to do to make it work.

If you look at a baseball laying on a table, what do you see? My guess would be – you might see only one side of the ball. What if someone – like a coach – would enable you to see what is going on on the other side? Would you know more? Would you benefit from that? Whether you are an entrepreneur or a house wife, you would benefit from coaching, you will succeed in every aspect of your life.

Coaching works because:

You will work with a professional coach, who is trained to listen, observe, identify needs, and customize the approach to and strategies

A coach will work with you to identify, develop and focus on your strengths

You will have a step by step plan how to achieve what you want or need

You will have increased confidence and motivation to set and achieve new goals

You will have the tools how to be happier, balanced, become more successful, and enjoy your life
